In his recent films director Clint Eastwood has been telling stories about ordinary men: simple American citizens who were challenged in one way or another at a certain moment of their lives, and that became a turning point for them.
When a simple American security guard named Richard Jewell saves thousands of lives from an exploding bomb at the 1996 Olympics, the whole country hails him as a hero. Unfortunately, all miracles last three days (in this case literally), and soon Richard finds himself unjustly vilified by the press who falsely report that he was a terrorist. They are accusing him of staging the whole 'discovering the bombs' scene in order to gain media attention and become a hero. As the real terrorist was not discovered until 6 years later, the FBI held on to this version for a long time even when it became more and more evident that Richard has been falsely accused.
Clint Eastwood directs this true story with great precisity and sense of justice, but what a shame that the antagonists (an FBI agent and a journalist) are a bit like living caricatures, being stereotypically bad-to-the-bone figures in this film. Apart from that, 'Richard Jewell' is a strong movie with great acting (see especially Kathy Bates and Paul Walter Hauser) which could have been a masterpiece with a little more subtlety.
